How to revise effectively: the method that fits into three principles
Re-reading your notes feels like progress and fixes almost nothing. Here are the three mechanisms that genuinely make the difference, and how to put them in place this week.
You have spent four hours on a chapter. You have read it three times, highlighted everything, the page is fluorescent yellow. The next day, facing a blank sheet, almost nothing is left.
That is not a motivation problem, nor a memory problem. It is a method problem. Re-reading is the most practised revision activity and one of the least effective, and there is a precise reason why.
Why re-reading fools you
When you re-read a passage, it becomes familiar. That familiarity feels good: you recognise the words, the ideas flow, you feel in control. Researchers call it processing fluency: how easily information goes through.
The trap is that your brain confuses that ease with knowledge. Yet recognising an answer when you see it and being able to produce it without the text in front of you are two completely different operations. The exam asks for the second. Re-reading only trains the first.

Principle 1. Test yourself instead of re-reading
The mechanism that makes the difference is called retrieval practice: pulling the information out of your memory, with no support.
The effort of retrieval is what strengthens the memory trace. The harder you have to work to find an idea, without failing completely, the more solid the next recall will be. It is counter-intuitive: a revision session that feels hard is often one that worked, and a smooth session is often a wasted one.
Concretely, at the end of each paragraph you read:
- Close the course.
- Write down or say out loud what you have just understood.
- Reopen it and compare.
That simple back-and-forth turns reading into testing. You will feel slower. That is normal: you are actually moving forward, instead of moving through pages.
The most profitable format: the question
The most effective form of retrieval practice is the closed question you have to answer from memory. A well-built multiple-choice question — with plausible wrong answers, not absurd ones — forces you to discriminate, and therefore to understand.

Principle 2. Space it out instead of massing it
The second mechanism is spacing. For the same total time, four thirty-minute sessions spread over two weeks produce markedly better retention than two hours in a row the night before.

20 minutes: test yourself with no support. Answer a quiz, reformulate the ideas out loud, rebuild a diagram from memory. Write down even an imperfect answer: that is what makes the gap visible.
10 minutes: correct precisely. Compare each answer with the course. Note the cause of the error, not just the right answer: pure forgetting, confusion between two ideas, misunderstood definition. Those three causes are not fixed the same way.
10 minutes: reformulate. Rewrite from memory the three shakiest ideas, in your own words. If you cannot do it without looking, they are not learned: they go into the next session.
The mistakes that cost the most
Highlighting and calling it work. Highlighting is a sorting activity, not a memorisation one. It has value if it prepares a sheet or a quiz. On its own it produces nothing.
Copying your notes out neatly. Many hours for an almost mechanical operation. If you must write, write from memory, not by copying.
