Spaced repetition, explained simply (and how to apply it without a complicated app)
Reviewing an idea just before you forget it doubles retention for the same amount of work. Here is the mechanism, the intervals that work, and the mistakes that cancel the whole benefit.
You learn a definition on Monday. By Wednesday it is blurry. By Friday it is gone. That is normal: forgetting is not a failure, it is memory working the way it always does.
Spaced repetition means using that forgetting instead of suffering it.
The mechanism in one sentence
The closer you are to forgetting something when you retrieve it, the more durable the memory trace becomes.
That is all. The rest is just a calendar.
The intuition to correct is that you improve by reviewing often. In reality, reviewing too early achieves almost nothing: if the idea is still fresh, retrieving it costs no effort, and effort is what consolidates. Reviewing too late achieves nothing either: everything has to be relearned. The useful interval sits just before the point of forgetting, and it stretches with every successful recall.
The intervals that work
Sophisticated algorithms exist. For one semester of study, a simple progression is more than enough:

The adjustment rule fits in two lines:
- Idea retrieved effortlessly → move to the next interval, or even skip one.
- Idea missed → go back to the previous interval. Not to the start: to the previous one.
That last point matters. Many students reset a missed card "to zero", which condemns them to revisit the same hard ideas forever. Stepping back one notch is enough.
What to space out (and what not to)
Spaced repetition is made for declarative knowledge: definitions, dates, formulas, vocabulary, classifications, mechanisms. That is where it is spectacular.
It is far less suited to procedural skills: writing an essay, building a proof, working through a case study. Those need practice on whole assignments, not cards.
A law exam demands both: legal regimes suit cards perfectly, case-study methodology demands whole cases. Do not try to route the second through the first.
How to apply it concretely
Paper version
The Leitner method, with five boxes. A card you get right moves up a box, a card you miss moves down one. You review box 1 every day, box 2 every two days, box 3 once a week, and so on.
It works very well. The cost is making the cards and keeping the calendar.
Automated version
That is exactly the job of a spaced-repetition flashcard system: it remembers what you missed, computes the next review date, and only shows you the cards due today.

The four mistakes that cancel the benefit
Making cards that are too long. One card = one piece of information. "List the five causes of the First World War" is not a card, it is an essay plan. Split it up.
Recognising instead of producing. If you look at the answer three seconds after the question without really searching, you are re-reading with extra steps. Force yourself to say the answer out loud before flipping the card.
Turning everything into cards. A whole course converted into flashcards produces six hundred cards you will never play. Target the load-bearing ideas and the ones you get wrong.
Giving up after three days. Spacing only pays off after two or three cycles. For the first two weeks it feels like wasted time. That is precisely where most people stop.
The arithmetic that should convince you
Twenty minutes a day, five days a week, for six weeks: ten hours of work.
One all-nighter before each exam, four exams: twelve hours of work, nothing left a month later, and four sleepless nights.
Same hourly cost. Not remotely the same result, nor the same life.
